Are these apps on your phone?

When smartphones first hit the market, very few knew the power these devices would have. Only a few applications, or ‘apps,’ were available.

Soon, thousands of developers began creating apps that would make taking pictures, shooting video, recording sound, and sending emails much easier. Despite the good smartphones offer — there have been unfortunate consequences.

Some adolescents have used this technology to bully fellow students (also known as cyberbullying) and send graphic images. In fact, did you know a majority of young people own a smartphone and spend an average of 7.5 hours online a day?

To make parents and adolescents’ lives easier, we’ve decided to list four essential apps every young person should own.

Report Bullying with Sprigeo

Everyone has the right to feel safe at school. Kids and teens use Sprigeo to report bullying and school safety incidents. Someone at your school has been bullied and needs you to step up and help – Take Action.

How it works

Reports can be sent anonymously and go directly to a school principal. The app is easy to use with only three screens before the submit button. Most of the questions have a list of options to choose from, so you don’t need to type too much information.

Why it helps

Only 20 – 30 percent of students who are bullied tell a teacher or family member.

This app uses humor as a strategy to change the subject of a serious epidemic facing adolescents. Instead of having to come up with an excuse or reason not to send an explicit image to a significant other, users can download one of the many hilarious screenshots found on this app to diffuse the situation.

Why it helps

Nearly 40 percent of all teenagers have posted or sent sexually suggestive messages.

Price – Free

This app shows you the effects of smoking on your face (both short-term and long-term). The app can be use at any age but was originally developed for 10-15 year old students.

How it works

Simply download the app and provide a photo of yourself; either one already in your gallery, or by taking one. Then, let the app show you how’ll look with years of smoking.

Why it helps

By kids knowing the effects of smoking, they are less likely to engage in this risky behavior.

healthyHealthy Relationships

Healthy Love

Price – Free

Are you with the right partner? Take the healthy love quiz now and find out if you are in a healthy relationship. This app is for women (but can be used by men) that want to have a peaceful, respectful and loving relationship with their partner.

How it works

Answer several questions. Users are allowed to click on multiple answers at once. After completing the short quiz, you’ll be notified if you’re in a healthy relationship or not. If you’re in an unhealthy relationship, this app will provide resources for you to get in touch with someone who can help.

Why it helps

Knowing whether you’re in a healthy relationship or not is key to long-term health.
